Vacation road trips are a great way of making memories with your family. But, each year, many families remember the accidents instead of the fun. Be sure to keep your family safe by following these easy tips.

Plan your route in advance. With the technology available at our fingertips, it’s tempting to let your phone’s GPS handle the navigation. Make sure you have a backup in case of problems. Know the general routes and roads you will be following and have a print out of your journey in case you lose cell signal.

If possible, drive in known congested areas during off-peak hours. Consider leaving late at night (if night driving is ok with you) or early in the morning to avoid traffic jams and congestion.

  • For longer trips, break up your trip over more than one day to avoid frustration and fatigue.
  • Always wear seatbelts and put children in car seats.
  • Know local traffic laws before you get behind the wheel.
  • Never drink and drive, especially in an unfamiliar area.
